Provence

A Region of Simple Delight

Slow down and enjoy the view with a trip to Provence. Sit back and breathe in the scent of fresh lavender fields, sample delicious food and explore at your own pace.

With its rolling hills, rushing rivers, and beautiful lavender fields, Provence has plenty of natural highlights. Stop off at Gorges du Loup to see the natural, 4km deep gorges and cascading waterfalls. Hike along the river and then cool off with a dip. Visit the nearby town of Gourdon for a spot of lunch along the way. Gorges de la Méouge is a large canyon that’s fantastic for hiking and swimming. Explore the canyon on one of the many hiking trails. A popular swimming spot is by the Roman bridge with three arches. For an awe-inspiring experience, visit UNESCO Géoparc de Haute-Provence which is bordered between the Alps and Provence. You could easily spend a day in this park, learning its geological and natural heritage before viewing contemporary art in its museum.

There’s plenty of outdoor challenges to take on in Provence. Discover the region on a bike and cycle up the legendary Mont Ventoux or test yourself with a ride up the ‘Giant of Provence’, a monstrous mountain that is included in the Tour de France. Provence has plenty of top-quality limestones so that means that the region has some fantastic routes for new and more experienced climbers.

One thing that Provence is well known for, is its lavender fields. The best time to see this magnificent purple sight is in July when the lavender is in bloom. Every year, on the third Sunday of July, there is a Lavender Festival in Valensole.

There’s an abundance of delicious restaurants and cafés in Provence and whether it’s fine dining in a Michelin starred restaurant or a quick bite to eat, there’s something to satisfy all hungry tummies after a busy day exploring. Wine lovers, rejoice! Provence is blessed with many vineyards to taste and tour. Whether it’s a crisp white wine, full-bodied reds, or a cheeky rosé, there’s a wealth of vineyards to choose from. Go on, fill your glass!

Whether you want to take things up or down a gear, Provence has plenty of adventures, sights and experiences to keep all travellers happy.
