Karlskrona

One City. 1,650 Islands, Inlets and Skerries.

Built on 33 of the 1,650 islands that make up the archipelago, Karlskrona is a truly unique city, and not just in terms of how it looks. It has a different feeling that you just won’t experience anywhere else: the rich history, the grandeur of the architecture and a sense of exclusivity that is ‘extra’ in every way, all wrapped up in a cool vibe that is distinctly Swedish. It’s the perfect place to chill…

Founded in 1680 by Karl XI when he established a naval base here, Karlskrona has taken on a whole life of its own. And it’s not hard to see why: the natural environment is undoubtedly the region’s biggest attraction, drawing people who want to enjoy the healthy, outdoor lifestyle on the water.

Today, Karlskrona has UNESCO World Heritage status in recognition of the well-preserved architecture and city plan. If you want to explore the incredible churches, squares, parade streets and traditional architecture, take a tour to discover a wealth of history and heritage.

The city sits in the middle of the archipelago, which is also one of just seven biosphere reserves in Sweden, and the centre has an island of its own, 6km from the mainland. The Great Square is one of Europe’s largest and most beautiful and the shopping streets are just a short walk from the jetty - you can take an archipelago boat or even hire a kayak to paddle at your own pace. The Naval Base remains the country’s largest and has its own museum, complete with submarine, dive boat, 18th century figureheads and an underwater tunnel where you can see a genuine shipwreck.

Nearby, you’ll find the island of Saltö. This is mainly a residential area but has a fantastic beach with diving tower which kids love. Crossing Saltö will take you to Dragsö, which offers more beaches, camping, hiking trails, a guest harbour, restaurant, miniature golf and fishing. So much for a little island and it’s all a world away from the city in just a short hop!

Karlskrona is your perfect city base from which to explore all of the archipelago – and there’s a lot to see. You can camp on a deserted island if you’re feeling truly adventurous. Most of us are content to dip our toes into a glorious bay, climb wave washed rocks or just recline on the sand and watch everyone else splash around in the sea!

Whatever you’re looking for, there’s an island for you!

Go to Hasslö where you’ll find cottages, hostels, a restaurant and a vineyard! Bring your own bike on the archipelago boat for exploring or take a hike – the island is easy to get around on foot. Go a little further and cross the Hasslö bridge to Almö where you’ll find more trails, beautiful scenery and a golf club. You can play a few holes or just have lunch – either way you can enjoy the views. Sturkö is Blekenge’s largest island at the heart of the archipelago, popular with swimmers for its bathing coves.

If your idea of the perfect break involves the great outdoors, Karlskrona has everything you need and more.
