Öland

Sweden’s Summer Island Paradise!

Cross the bridge from Kalmar in the car or take the foot passenger ferry to travel to Öland, the second largest Swedish island and the country’s smallest province. It is, however, big on everything you’ll need to enjoy a real break away from it all. Öland is truly a destination with a difference, all of it naturally and uniquely beautiful.

Ö is the Swedish word for island and Öland translates into the English as ‘island land’. It’s a deceptively simple name that belies the sheer breath-taking awesomeness of a place that is a summer paradise for Swedes – not least the Swedish Royal Family who have their summer residence, Solliden Palace, here, which you can visit between May and September.

As well as many long sandy beaches, this thin, mostly flat island is notable for its flora and fauna – some of which you won’t find anywhere else. The Great Alvar, a limestone plain which is home to rare orchids, stretches across southern Öland and is regarded as an untouched natural beauty. There are villages, farmland, and cultivated pastures but the entire area is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s quite unlike anywhere else on earth.

On the island’s west coast sits Borgholm Castle, often called the most beautiful castle ruins in Scandinavia. The size and scale of the Castle is hugely impressive and its history is pretty epic: it’s been home to everyone from kings and queens to prisoners and guards. Today, it attracts many visitors and holds regular tours and events – you can even catch a concert here.  If you like an active break, follow the many hiking or cycling trails: they’re all laid out for you to follow, whatever your fitness, age or ability.

But more than anything, Öland is a place to take a breath. The air here is fresh and pure and the island is made for walking or cycling. Slow your pace, experience nature, and soak up the history. Or just listen to the waves as you relax on the beach with a picnic.

The historical town of Borgholm has been a popular bath and spa resort since the late 19th century when guests came from all over Sweden by steamboat to enjoy the fresh air. Today, you can enjoy the spectacle of the grand seaside mansions, the open-air swimming baths at the marina or venture into the forest along the seashore. You can also take your pick of cosy cafés and restaurants, most supplied by local farmers and food producers, or browse the niche shops.

It is possible to experience Öland in a day, but we recommend you stay at least a little bit longer. The island offers tourists a great choice of accommodation, from hotels with a luxury vibe to bed & breakfast accommodation and camping, so it’s perfect for couples or families.
