Lithuania may be small in size but that just means it’s a little gem. There’s still lots to see and do and the country is big on hospitality – just what you need after days adventuring in flatlands and forests, lakes and landscapes. Like Latvia, Lithuania has a few of its own white sandy beaches which are popular in summer. But one geographical feature that is unique to Lithuania, shared only with Kaliningrad Oblast, is the Curonian Spit…

The most northerly half of the stunning Curonian Spit is technically in Lithuania but it is not connected to it by land, so to visit you’ll need to catch a quick ferry from Klaipėda to Smiltyne. We recommend taking the car on the ferry to see as much of the 100km peninsula as you can – or you can hire a bike in Nida when you get there. Nida is home to Parnidis Dune, which you can climb to get an amazing view. The Spit is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its unique ecosystem and incredible natural beauty.

Also in Nida is the Thomas Mann Cultural Centre, the most visited museum in Lithuania. It’s a memorial to the famous German writer and a forum for cultural and scientific encounters, promoting good neighbourliness, humanism, and cosmopolitanism.

Klaipėda is a port city and its old town is quaintly filled with German-style, 18th-century wood-framed buildings and the neoclassical Drama Theatre, which holds concerts throughout the year. The cobblestoned Theatre Square is perfect for people watching as it’s where crowds gather to enjoy a fine day in the city. Klaipėda also has the popular Lithuanian Sea Museum, the only one of its kind in the Baltics and where you’ll find more than 100,000 creatures and exhibits – including penguins and a dolphinarium.

Lithuania’s capital, Vilnius, sits nestled in the southeast. It’s the largest old baroque town in Eastern Europe and has everything you need for a comfortable stay as you travel to this historic city with a uniquely modern vibe.

Just a little to the west, and almost in the centre of Lithuania, you’ll find the city of Kaunas - 2022 European Capital of Culture. It’s an exciting time for the city with a solid 52-week cultural calendar of arts events that is designed to mark the beginning of a new creative era. If ever there was a great time to discover Kaunas, this is it!

Lithuania is also popular with foodies who come for the unique range of tastes and flavours that are on the menu. Kepta Duona are fried bread sticks – made from the famous rye bread of course – and are a great bar snack. Cepelinai are meat-filled potato dumplings – perfect comfort food – and we can also recommend Kibinai, an ideal snack pastry that you can pick up from a street cart or bakery. For cheese lovers, Lithuania is something of a paradise – pair it with the local honey for a match made in heaven. Or if you have a sweet tooth, you must try the Šakotis, a traditional Polish-Lithuanian cake that is baked in layers over a spit.
