What fees, dues and charges apply and when?

Any discounts or points given are based on the fare before applying any fees and dues. The various fees that are applicable are outlined below:-

Dues

Dues are applicable and the cost varies depending on whether you are travelling with a vehicle or on foot. Child dues are 50% of the adult due costs.

Environmental fees

As part of the shipping industry’s push to become even more green and environmentally friendly, a new cap on sulphur content in fuel was introduced at the start of 2020. This is a global regulation that is being applied to all shipping worldwide by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). The goal of the regulation is to significantly and progressively reduce sulphur emissions within all areas of international shipping. A cap of 0.5% sulphur meant a combination of higher fuel costs and/or fleet investment for all ferry operators in the region in order to switch to low sulphur fuels or an equivalent solution from 1 January 2020. As the new directive sees operating costs increase outside of Stena Line’s control, an environmental fee was introduced to alleviate the additional cost. Please note fees may be subject to change depending on fuel price development, in which case every effort will be made to give as much notice as possible.

The European Union has introduced its Emissions Trading System (ETS) to the shipping industry which means that shipping companies will have to purchase allowances for CO2 emissions and other pollutants, and the money from the allowances will be used for EU’s green fund. For journeys starting from 1 January 2024, we will include a surcharge in our ticket prices to cover the oncost from the EU. This has an impact on ferry routes between two EU countries but also to some extent routes between an EU country and a non-EU country.
