Is the free Wi-Fi onboard as fast as my broadband at home?
We are delighted to offer this free service to you, however please note that Internet@Sea will never be as fast as the broadband you might enjoy at home or in other land-based locations. One of the main reasons for this is due to the technology behind the service. It’s a little complex but put simply, all of our ships have freely moving satellite antennae which transmit a signal from the ship to a satellite 35,000 miles into space which then sends a signal back down to Earth.
Speed will also vary due to the bandwidth available, which is delivered by satellite and accessed by all users and ships simultaneously. To help improve the service and to make efficient use of the available bandwidth, we have removed access to streaming media sites such as Netflix, YouTube, online games, Skype etc.
Mobile Data via your Mobile Phone
Whilst you can enjoy the flexibility of using your mobile phone onboard, it is important to note that the mobile network is delivered by MCP and that costs to receive and make calls, use mobile data and/or send/receive SMS messages will be higher than those charged whilst on land.
The costs charged to you are not within Stena Line’s control. If your mobile phone picks up the MCP network you should receive an SMS informing you that you are now on the MCP network and that call rates are charged at International mobile phone rates which are considerably higher than your regular call costs, the details of which you should obtain from your own service provider.
Important information: EU Roaming fees
Whilst roaming charges when travelling in EU countries ended on 15 June 2017 the EU roaming rules only apply when you are connected to terrestrial mobile networks. The EU binding price cap does not apply if you use your mobile phone onboard via the ferry’s satellite connection and therefore the charges set by your network provider can be high.
