Celebrating 125 Years

We are celebrating 125 Years of ferry travel between the UK and Holland! Our special route recorded its first sailing on the 1st of June 1893 from Harwich to Rotterdam via the Hook of Holland, initially offering crossings for travellers and freight and eventually expanding for coaches and cars; traffic was then predicted to increase from 25,000 in 1893 to over a million a year by 1993 and is still growing today!

Travel to the UK port was also improved with the opening of the railway in 1893, the new railway departed from London Liverpool Street (as the train to Harwich International still does today) to the port. Stena Line jumped onboard this special route in 1989 transforming it into luxury travel with cruise ferries. The route has since gone from the m.s Koningin Beatrix and the original Stena Britannica to the HSS and now to our new and improved superferries - the Stena Hollandica and Britannica, with fantastic new modern onboard facilities, smoother faster sailing and more room for all the passengers, cars freight pets & more!
