Festive Sinterklaas Parade

Sinterklaas arrives in each town on a steamboat packed with gifts. He’s easy to spot, with a long white beard, red cloak and flanked by his assistants the Zwarte Pieten (Black Peters), who help him as he gives out presents.

Onlookers are treated to a spectacle as Sinterklaas parades through the centre of town on his white horse, Amerigo, while the Zwarte Pieten throw small ginger biscuits to the crowd.

You’ll also find the country’s bakeries overflowing with treats like gingerbread men, spiced biscuits, marzipan and chocolate letters. Delicious!

When to go

Sinterklaas makes his appearance from 16th November, and festivities continue from then on. Traditionally, 5th December is the day when Sinterklaas gives out presents, and it’s also the day when Dutch people exchange gifts with one another and celebrate the festive season.
