Sales in Amsterdam

After Amsterdam's vibrant “Old Year’s Evening” celebrations, the city likes to settle into the New Year with a raft of diverse cultural events to complement its legendary sales.

Whether you have your heart set on a piece of contemporary Dutch furniture, some antique Delft ceramics, or a cutting-edge designer outfit, you're assured of fantastic bargains in Amsterdam's New Year Sales, particularly if you arrive early in the month.

art festival
Realisme and light festival

For a truly action-packed trip, book a long weekend to Amsterdam from 16 to 18 January 2015. Not only will you catch the dramatic finale of the Festival of Light, during which the city’s canals, buildings and venues are illuminated with light installations, but you’ll be in town for Realisme (15 - 18 January).

Set against the striking contemporary background of Amsterdam’s Passenger Terminal, Realisme is the world’s only art fair dedicated solely to figurative art, gathering together artists and galleries from across the globe.

whisky weekend
Whisky and Flamenco

For a taste of Scotland in the heart of the Netherlands, the annual Whisky Weekend (16 - 17 January) presents two days of tastings, nosings, food pairings and music performances, which all take place in the unusual surroundings of the 19th century Posthoornkerk church.

Bringing a dash of Spanish flair to Amsterdam, the fifth annual Flamenco Biennial will showcase the rich flamenco heritage through traditional and modern dance performances and song recitals in small, intimate venues across the city as well as workshops, lectures and master classes.

dutch tulips
National Tulip day

Finally, for a quintessentially Dutch experience, celebrate National Tulip Day with the locals on 17 January.

Each year, bulb growers from across the Netherlands and the world create a huge temporary garden, bursting with some 200,000 tulips, on Amsterdam's Dam Square and invite visitors to pick their own free tulip from the dedicated “picking garden”.

equestrian event
Jumping Amsterdam

Later in the month, horse-mad or simply horse-curious visitors can attend the prestigious Jumping Amsterdam equestrian event (23-26 January).

The event is an annual highlight on the calendar of the world's best horsemen and women, with show jumping and dressage competitions as well as evening entertainment, interactive children's shows and skills displays.

Grauzone festival

If you’re a music aficionado, Amsterdam’s iconic music venue Melkweg will be taken over by the multidisciplinary Grauzone festival from 30-31 January.

The festival celebrates the best in new wave music, art and film with performances from synth-pop and darkwave to post-punk and goth rock.
