Masters of the art of "gezeligheid" (cosiness with a dash of nostalgia), the Dutch make December a time for hunkering down in candlelit cafés with friends and family.
Amsterdam's picturesque streets and canals are awash with pretty Christmas trees, atmospheric festive markets and inviting boutiques. There's ice skating on a rink beneath the Rijksmuseum on Museumplein, flanked by stands selling warming mulled wine and traditional Dutch spiced biscuits.
The third annual Amsterdam Light Festival (27 November to 18 January 2015) ensures there's no nostalgia overkill, seeing the city's canals and gabled houses spectacularly illuminated by modern light sculptures, projections and installations by contemporary artists.
When Amsterdam really comes alive, however, is New Year's Eve. A relatively small city (the size of Manhattan), Amsterdam has a congenial big village feel and, when the "village" hosts a party, everybody gets involved!
The list of New Year's events is seemingly endless, with parties spilling out onto the streets to merge in one boisterous celebration of "Old Year's Day".
For something different, you could welcome in 2015 aboard the glamorous ship Ocean Diva Amsterdam while dancing to Hed Kandi tunes or marvel at aerial net antics and pole dancing at the infamous Supperclub.
The legendary Awakenings New Year’s Eve Special, held at the former gasworks, Westergasfabriek, sees international DJs including Carl Cox play till 6am, returning later on New Year's Day for a 12-hour techno marathon.
If you want to release your inner courtesan, head for Koepelkerk, a historic copper-domed church by the Singel, where La Société Boheme will host an extravagant Moulin Rouge night. There truly is a party for everybody in Amsterdam this New Year, so all you have to do is pick the one for you and get yourself there!
If you're in the mood for more restrained entertainment, check into the luxurious Dylan hotel, which is hosting a classy night of Champagne, cocktails and live music.
