Undiscovered Holland

When you think of Holland, Amsterdam and Rotterdam are the first places that spring to mind. But if you’re tired of the tourist hotspots, you may want to give one of these places a try:

Explore the market’s in Delft
Pick up a bargain at one of the markets in the picturesque city of Delft, towards the west of Holland. On Thursdays there’s a general market in the Markt Square as well as a pretty flower market along the canals that criss-cross the city. On Saturdays you can stop at the fruit and vegetable market for supplies before heading to the art and flea market, held between April and September.

Relax on the beach in Scheveningen, Den Haag
Love a beach holiday? This gem of a beach is not well-known among tourists so is never too crowded and the wide, sandy stretches make it the perfect place to take children. If you’re feeling daring you can even bungee jump off the end of the pier. Alternatively, just sip a cocktail in one of the beach bars or check out the impressive architecture surrounding the beach.

Get up close to the gorillas at Burgers’ Zoo, Arnhem
Not to mention the panthers, elephants, reindeers, wolves and chimpanzees. Burgers’ Zoo has a special Gorilla Island where you can get very close to the animals in their habitat thanks to a special cage. Plus see if you’re quick you could catch the baby gorilla born in August 2009. Find out more about Burgers’ Zoo

Discover fairies and more at Efteling Theme Park, Kaatsheuvel
Treat the kids or grandchildren to a magical experience at this fairytale-based amusement park. Budding princesses will marvel at the Dream Flight ride which transports you to a dream world of palaces, castles, fairies and elves, while those looking for adventure will love the Bobsleigh Run, before seeing if they can stay on their feet in the Ice Palace.
