For over 25 years, The Gemeentegrot Christmas market has been lighting up the municipal caves in Valkenburg, drawing visitors in search of Christmas gifts, food, drink and cheer.
The sprawling caverns, known as Cave City, are located at the foot of the Cauberg mountain. Every year in late November, they’re decorated with lights and packed with traditional stalls selling all kinds of treats and gifts. Christmas music fills the tunnels, creating a magical atmosphere.
Visitors can enjoy a taste of the famous Gluhwein (or mulled wine) and grab a bite to eat in the “enchanted garden” catering area in the centre of the cave.
The market kicks off on 19th November and continues until 23rd December. Admission is €4 for adults, children go free, and there’s parking available at the caves.
Fluweelengrot – Velvet Cave
Valkenburg’s Velvet Cave plays host to a Christmas market that leads you on a circular route through an underground pathway lined with stalls, all tucked into niches in the rock. They’re bursting with treasures, from hand-blown glass to candles and, of course, sweet treats including Belgian chocolate and old-fashioned Dutch poffertjes (mini pancakes).
The Fluweelengrot Christmas market is also home to a guest of honour – Santa Claus. Visitors can visit Santa’s house, see his room full of presents and catch a glimpse of his reindeer and sleigh.
And there’s a warm welcome at the Winter Wonderland Tavern, which serves Gluhwein and hearty meals to fortify you for more shopping!
The Fluweelengrot market opens on 18th November and continues until 23rd December. Admission is €4.50 for adults for children aged 5-11, and children under 5 go free.
