When you visit Holland with Stena Line in December you can experience something unique… two Christmases.
Sinterklass in Holland
On 5 December, Sinterklaas Eve, children can fill clogs or their shoes with hay and carrots for Sinterklaas’s horse and then wake up to find sweets and presents. Traditionally, presents are ingeniously wrapped, and are therefore called surprises. Presents are traditionally accompanied by a poem from Sinterklaas.
On 6 December, children can then gather around the harbour in Amsterdam for a glimpse Sinterklaas wearing his red bishop’s robes. He arrives by boat with his servant, Black Peter. Once Sinterklaas and Black Peter are ashore, church bells begin ringing in celebration as Sinterklaas leads a procession on a white horse through Amsterdam to meet the Queen in the palace.
