Regarded as one of the top 10 marathons around the world, the Amsterdam Marathon is a fantastic event for both running enthusiasts and supporters. Since 1978 the event has attracted the biggest names in the sport – thanks to its very flat course and excellent organisation.
Run through Amsterdam’s scenic highlights
The Amsterdam Marathon takes in all the highlights of Holland’s capital, including:
- the Olympic Stadium
- nature reserves on both sides of the River Amstel
- Amsterdam Maritime Museum
- the city’s historic canals
- Holland’s national museum, the Rijskmuseum
- the picturesque Vondelpark
Marathon for everyoneIt’s not just the 26-mile course that people can take part in at this year’s event. The Dutch Athletic Association, who run a number of big road races have created the 1K Runaway programme for children aged 6-13, with plenty of activities and fun for the little ones before and after the race.
Organised by international fitness magazine Runner’s World, it attracts more than 30,000 visitors. You can buy the latest sports clothing, shoes and accessories from all the top brands, find lots of marathon souvenirs or even indulge in a pre-race sports massage.
