On the 19 October 2010, Susan Hammond, wife of the Rt Hon Philip Hammond MP, Secretary of State for Transport christened the Stena Britannica at Harwich International Port.
The occasion was celebrated by more than 400 guests, including Stena AB chairman Dan Sten Olsson; Stena Line managing director Gunnar Blomdahl and Philip Hammond MP.
The Stena Britannica Superferry is larger than any other under the British flag, and is 240m in length which dwarfs other British-registered ferries and is 2.4 times the height of the Big Ben clock tower.
The Stena Britannica is the second of two newly-built Superferries and has joined the Stena Hollandica, launched in May 2010, making the Stena Line route between Harwich and the Hook of Holland the most modern ferry route in the world.
This brand new Superferry’s onboard services include free Wi-Fi, satellite television in lounges and cabins, mobile reception throughout the crossing as well as bars and restaurants, a cinema, the Stena Plus Lounge, media room and internet corner. For families there are children and teenager zones, plus 12 kennels for dogs and a wooden-decked sundeck to allow passengers to relax outdoors during their journey.
