In 2009 and 2010 the ten top museums in the four biggest cities in the Netherlands; Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht will take part in an initiative called 'Holland Art Cities'. The Van Gogh Museum, Hermitage Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum and Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis (The Hague), Museum Catharijneconvent and Centraal Museum (Utrecht) and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and Kunsthal Rotterdam (Rotterdam) are putting together and extensive cultural and touristic programme around three themes: international influences, contemporary art & design and Dutch Masters. In doing so, Holland Art Cities is creating the highest concentration of art and cultural activities per square kilometre in the world.
Some of the most beautiful museums in the world are only an hour’s travelling time from one another. Throughout Holland Art Cities, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht will be inundated with art and culture, which will consist of at least 25 exhibitions over the course of two years and is an absolute must for all art lovers.
During Holland Art Cities the works of art on display will be categorised into three themes: International Influences, Young Artists, Contemporary Art and Design and Dutch Masters. The Holland Art Cities theme Schedule is as follows:
- Theme 1: International Influences 8 November 2008 - 31 August 2009
- Theme 2: Young: Modern and Contemporary Art and Design 1 September 2009 - 30 June 2010
- Theme 3: Dutch Masters 1 July 2010 - 30 June 2011
